Video in Content Marketing: 5 Tips for Quality Production

In our first episode of the Content with Humans’ podcast, I spoke with friend and fellow-networker, Dave Power from Power Creative. Dave generously shared his expertise and views on leveraging video content for marketing, creating thought leadership content, and navigating the challenges of video for events.

You can view the full video episode on the Article Writers Australia You Tube channel, but here are 5 tips from Dave on how to ensure a successful video production.

1. Cutting budget in the wrong place can be costly

If you’re trying to trim the budget for videography, before saying “we don’t need that” to a line item, be sure you understand what impact removing it will have on the outcome. Often, something that’s eliminated can have a flow on effect, and a change that saves only a small amount of money can affect the overall outcome in a much bigger way. An experienced videographer will be able to advise you on these things – good communication and the right advice can avoid many problems!

2. Choose a high quality platform

When planning an online or hybrid event, choose a high-quality paid platform like Vimeo. The level of security is high, and if there’s one thing you can’t afford, it’s to have the video drop out, or be dealing with a bad connection during an event. This applies as much to small events like online webinars as to major events – if things go wrong, it can reflect poorly on your brand, or in a worst-case scenario, ruin the entire event.

3. Create a plan to engage attendees

For online and hybrid events, do everything you can to assist online attendees to engage in the event. Plan what this engagement will look like in advance. There are plenty of tools to use, from the chat box to tools like Slido. Whatever tools you choose, it’s equally as important to ensure you have the right people in place to manage the flow of information. How is the MC on stage receiving that information so he or she can speak about it in the room?

4. Use a professional interviewer

If you’re recording a video that will include one or more speakers, use a professional interviewer. How you use the interviewer will depend on the type of content you’re creating. An experienced media interviewer can narrate, interview people to keep the conversations flowing in the right direction, or simply help people to structure their messages off-camera. Yes, it’s an additional cost, but it’s well worth the investment to ensure a high-quality result.

5. Understand the importance of storytelling

This applies whether you’re shooting customer testimonial videos, or informational videos. Stories capture and hold attention. Use a storyboard to plan. If you’re using a professional videographer, they’ll typically be preparing a storyboard. If you’re planning and shooting videos in-house, don’t leave out this important planning element.

As is the case with other formats used in content marketing, good planning, good preparation, and good communication with any service providers are the keys to an excellent outcome!
